Niels was born in the province of Groningen, The Netherlands in 1980 and grew up in a village in the eastern part of the province. In 2001 Niels moved to the city of Groningen where he still lives, together with his girlfriend and daughter. Niels studied Computer Science at the University of Groningen and now works as an IT Architect at a Dutch IT services company. As a student, when he only got a simple point-and-shoot camera, Niels got inspired by a few photographing fellow students. As a result, after graduation in 2005, Niels spent his first salary on his first DSLR, a Canon EOS 350D with a Tamron 18-200 super-zoom lens. This combination was ideal to discover what kind of photography he liked best, which soon turned out to be landscape photography.
To create the greatest landscape photographs, requirements to the gear used are high and therefore the 350D was replaced by a nice EOS 7D a few years ago, but more importantly, the super-zoom lens was replaced by two Canon ‘L’-lenses and the Canon EF-S 10-22 wideangle workhorse. On top of the wish list today is Canon’s new 5DIII, which would actually be able to push the lenses to their limits. (Really need to update this since I’ve already owned the 5DIII for a couple of years now).
Landscape photography is a true passion to Niels, which combines very well with another great passion, travelling. The last decade Niels has been able to travel a lot and to see some of the greatest landscapes in the world. While some of the photos shot while travelling are available as well, this site mainly focuses on Dutch landscapes.
